About Us

    Background Information

  • Promedical is a group of medical doctors (Medical specialists in all disciplines and GPs) incorporated on 14th December 2017 in terms of act 14 Cooperatives act 2005.
  • The need for professionals from other fields of study outside the medical field resulted in other professionals being recruited into Promedical. These professionals include attorneys, accountants and allied health professionals.
  • Promedical members pay membership fees on joining and are in return given Promedical shares in line with the Cooperatives act 2005.
  • At present Promedical has about 500 members country wide out of which about 105 have invested some money.
  • The main goal of Promedical is to become a co-operative bank at which point it will lend money to its members and finance its projects and member projects at an interest lower than commercial banks.
  • The other goal of Promedical is to create a fund that will finance the building of its private hospitals, rehabilitation centres, day hospitals and medical centres.
  • The private hospitals and medical centres will mainly be in the townships, rural areas and other places of need and will be positioned between private and government hospitals in terms of cost.
  • These hospitals will be ready to contract with NHI as and when it is rolled out.
  • At the present moment our clients are RAF, WCA and low-income medical aid plans, out of pocket paying patients and other medical aids.
  • Promedical via its umbrella body (MDCM) is also organising at the work place in forming workplace cooperatives that will buy comprehensive health services from Promedical.
  • The biggest future market for Promedical is the one depicted by the pyramid below. This market resides in the middle of the pyramid and is approximately 15million people who cannot afford a medical aid and yet can pay out of their pockets. These people do not ordinarily use government health services unless forced by circumstances to do so and yet do have cash to make out of pocket payments.

The following triangle illustrates our target market

  • Our strategy is not to only invest in our own health infrastructure but to partner and invest in government too, by negotiating space to add theatres, ICUs and wards to better service those who pay from their pockets. This is in line with folateng policy and PPP .
  • This model and strategy put us in a better position to provide sustainable affordable and quality health to out of pocket paying patients, and most importantly to the diaspora.
  • Promedical believes that the potential out of pocket paying patients is about 15 million, however adding the diaspora may be even more.
  • The B segment (middle of the pyramid), we believe will always shift up or down in favour of Promedical as the country’s economy changes and the rollout of NHI will always work in our favour too.

Promedical business model:

Promedical invests in health and health related projects as we feel that it’s the only area, we are comfortable with in terms of knowledge and experience.
In all our investments, equipment and property ownership is key except in very few instances when doing business with government.
Promedical finances and take equity in all businesses brought by its members and strictly finances health facilities and nothing else by pulling funds from its members on monthly and/or adhoc basis.
Promedical does not believe in duplicating what already exist, but instead it always seeks to negotiate partnerships with those who share the vision.
Promedical makes use of its members to deliver health services to its patients who are cooperatives members and non-cooperatives members.

    Vision

  • To provide an alternative, affordable, sustainable and comprehensive health to South Africans and the African diaspora.
  • To economically empower healthcare providers and the patients.
  • To strategically close the gap that’s not covered by NHI.

    Mission

  • To build our own health facilities closer to the people.
  • To control money flow in and out of our own system of networks.
  • To ensure that both healthcare professionals and patients get value for money from our service offering.
  • To ensure we close all gaps left by NHI and provide quality health service to the diaspora.

Partners in business

    Private businesses

  • All private entities that share the same vision with Promedical are our possible partners.Promedical is in negotiations with strategic hospital groups on the acquisition of shares, joint ownership and control.

    Provincial governments

  • Promedical is in talks with various provincial governments in crafting partnership that will result in Promedical utilising the available space in government hospitals to erect more theatres, ICUs and wards. Currently Promedical operates Raf patients in both Government and Private hospitals. This helps government to raise the much needed revenue from Raf at no cost to Promedical as Promedical Doctors claim for their services from Raf.

Forward thinking

Promedical always look forward to new ideas and partnerships as it does not believe it has the monopoly of wisdom and therefore all the solutions to problems bedevilling our health system are welcome.
